Understanding Ponzi Schemes
A Ponzi scheme occurs when people are hyped into buying into a project based on promised "high returns." In reality, these returns are simply paid out using funds from new investors—and sometimes even a portion of your own initial investment. The operators will continue paying out these fake profits only as long as a steady stream of new victims keeps the scheme afloat.
How to Protect Yourself
- Follow the Money: Always research how income is generated for any project or asset on the Stellar network. Value does not materialize out of thin air; there must be a clear, logical flow of how funds enter and exit the system.
- Look for Real Utility: If a project has no genuine utility—meaning it does not generate outside profits through actual use cases within the Stellar ecosystem—it is highly likely to be either a Ponzi scheme or a money-laundering operation.
